The 5th London battalion arrived in France at the beginning of November, 1914, where they joined 11 Brigade of 4th Division. They moved into the trenches for the first time on 20th November at Romarin, a small hamlet to the west of Ploegsteert and on 8th December they moved forward from Ploegsteert to the front line, each company attached to the regular battalions of the brigade. Relieved from these positions on 12th December, they moved back to Ploegsteert from where, over the next week, they provided working parties in Ploegsteert Wood. On 19th December, 5th London moved forward to support an attack by other battalions of 11 Brigade but this attack was unsuccessful and they were not called on to assist. Instead they spent an uncomfortable morning under shell fire. Thomas Jolly died from wounds on 19th December but the exact date on which he was wounded  is not known.
